afterthoughts social media and healthcare ideagoras 2011Yesterday we attended the event organized by Ideagoras & CIBBVA “Social Media in HealthCare & Wellness: Building a truly two-way engagement in Healthcare. I’d like to congratulate Ángel González, Cindy Cárdenas and the rest of the organizing team for their dynamic approach, for the quality of speakers. I’d also like to thank them personally for giving me the chance to moderate the second discussion panel (with Rob Halkes from Drimpy and Jorge Juan Fernández from Hospital Sant Joan de Déu).

I had a lot of questions and after thoughts that remain unsaid, so that’s why we have the defenestrated blogs (really?) and Twitter (I must say that Angel’s metaphor about twitter being a “tuneladora” sounds much better in Spanish than in English, because “Tunnel Boring Machine”…doesn’t just make it. LOL). We have blogs and Twitter to continue the conversation:

Concerning the challenges that are brought by the “filter bubble” (a new buzzword, but not a new behavior):

  • Since we shouldn’t take for granted that everyone knows how to search, and how to discern and how to find different and opposite results, and how to get out of the echo chamber…Why don’t we include in education the subject of learning how to search and take control of results -if possible? Kids, teens, grown-ups…everyone should know this. It’s a duty and a right. Information society is for everyone…or is it? We’d be appalled by the figures to find out that hundreds of thousands of people with internet access, of all ages, don’t know (for instance).
  • Ok, so Amazon did it, Google does it, but why Facebook? What’s the (hidden) benefit for them in regulating and filtrating what’s being shown to us? 

Regarding projects:

  • How is success measured? Let’s talk about it, let’s crunch the numbers, let’s keep it focused and specific, and realistic. How to measure that objectives are being accomplished? (an objective should answer the question “why are we investing in this?”)
  • Who is the owner of EHR -Electronic Health Record? Let me unravel the question. When you sign up in Flicker, the small print says that you still own the pictures whereas when you sign up in Facebook, your content just doesn’t belong to you. So in health, what do we have: illnesses, conditions…Please any PI expert correct me if wrong but I can’t own the fact that I’m being diagnosed psoriasis but once the diagnosis is written down, and goes along with tests etc…That’s not a fact and becomes a tangible object that’s owned by someone, and if it’s owned it can be sold (unless laws have a say on this). So who owns my EHR at Drimpy and alike projects around the world and The Cloud?
  • Why do concepts such as marketing, communication, objectives, feasible ROI, provable ROI, getting more patients, getting more patients who prescribe your services, your hospital or whatever seem stigmatized and we use instead a lot of abstract conceptualization?
  • Why don’t we address at and speak clearly about business models, or the spread of the intermediary business -that gets in the way of patients and doctors/pharmas? I’m convinced that many projects aren’t altruist, and it isn’t a BAD THING, you know, to provide users with a free or premium service , or with supper patient support or with who knows what… while making money out it…if you say it loud and clearly. Hiding everything behind the mask of altruism puzzles me. Who tells me that when signing up in a service where I rate doctors, or where I share my experiences or where I upload my EHRs…I won’t get ads from pharma products addressing at my condition, I won’t need to pay to hide those ads? I mean, it’s not bad, but at least tell me, don’t hide it, and let me choose beforehand whether I want this or NOT.
